Universal Time is used in log book record keeping, and standardizes the observing time for research and for submission to observing clubs and award programs. |
Hours added to your present time in "Military Time" = UT.
If you are unfamiliar with this system, please read the conversion example
below.

The UT Conversion Chart uses what is generally referred to as Military Time
or European Time.
If it is 9:26 AM Eastern Standard Time, and you want to know the equivalent in Universal Time, add 5 hours to 9:00 EST. This gives you a Universal Time of 14:00 UT. Add the minutes, and the correct time is 14:26 UT. If it is 9:26 PM Eastern Standard Time, and you want to know the equivalent in Universal Time, add 5 hours to 21:00 EST. This gives you a Universal Time of 26:00 UT. Since there is no "26:00 hours" designation, you take the 2 hours that go past 24:00 hours, and begin again with the AM designations. This will place you at 2:00. Add the minutes, and the correct time is 2:26 UT -- the "next day" from your perspective. |
